Spam

While Psyphire uses effective several techniques to combat SPAM, not all of this junk can be stopped.  There are several reasons why you may receive some as the email account matures.  The following are a list of common reasons associated with getting SPAM:

  1. You have filled out a form to download software or access private information: Most well known and reputable companies offer a visitor the means to opt-out of any newsletters or other junk mail services when filling out personal data required to achieve the above mentioned criteria. However, if you are unfamiliar with the sponsor or company, it is recommended that any data you do supply not be accurate, yet not afforded to the sponsor in a manner that will inadvertently forward this email to some other unsuspecting individual.

  2. You have replied to SPAM asking to be removed from their mailing list: A common method used by SPAMMERs to find valid email accounts is to forward email allowing the recipient the ability to have themselves “removed”. More often than not, your email address will not be removed, but included on more lists as an “active email address”. The best method of dealing with these email are to ignore them or report the form of abuse to the company responsible for housing the email account.

  3. You have registered software that you have purchased: Most reputable companies will stick by their word, however there are some that will share your personal information with their partners and affiliates. Be sure to read a company’s privacy policy carefully if you are uncertain of the results.

  4. You have posted to a newsgroup or other public forum: SPAMMERs build web “spiders” that are capable of traversing
hundreds of thousands of web pages looking for email addresses to include in a database that can be used later for just that. Be forewarned that leaving your email address exposed in any public forum service leaves your email address vulnerable to such described SPAM methods.

  5. You have registered your information with a free-email service: There are a number of well-known email services that
can offer you a free email address. However, a large number of these services will turn around and sell your personal data to other companies, including those that specialize in delivering SPAM.

By default, your SPAM settings are set to a moderate level.  You can increase the strength of these SPAM settings in cPanel using “Email > Apache SpamAssassin” and “Email > BoxTrapper,” among other tools.  But beware that good email can get caught up in these spam filters, so be sure to check your junk mail from time to time.
